It’s one of the most common questions we hear from both new and established driving instructors: Should I be teaching in a manual or an automatic? The answer isn’t always straightforward – and for many instructors, the honest answer is both.
Here’s what to consider:
The case for manual:
Manual cars remain the most popular choice for learner drivers in the UK. Passing in a manual means a full licence – the ability to drive both manual and automatic vehicles – which is what most pupils are aiming for. As a result, demand for manual driving lessons has historically been higher, and many instructors find it easier to build a full diary in a manual car.
For PDIs just starting out, a manual dual control vehicle is often the natural first choice – it opens your teaching up to the widest possible pool of pupils and keeps your options flexible as your business grows.
The case for automatic:
Automatic cars are growing in popularity, and fast. As electric vehicles become more common – all of which are automatic – the long-term direction of travel is clear. Many instructors are already seeing strong demand for automatic lessons, particularly from pupils who have struggled with a manual or who simply prefer the idea of learning without the added complexity of gears.
Teaching in an automatic also has practical benefits. Lessons can feel less stop-start, pupils often progress more quickly, and many instructors find the experience less stressful for everyone in the car. For instructors who have been teaching for a while and are looking to refresh their offering, adding an automatic to their fleet is an increasingly popular move.
What about offering both?
Some instructors choose to run both a manual and an automatic, either simultaneously or by transitioning over time. This gives maximum flexibility and the ability to cater to a wider range of pupils – but it’s worth considering the financial and practical implications of running two vehicles before making the leap.
So which should you choose?
There’s no universal right answer – it depends on your local market, your existing pupil base, and where you see your business heading. What matters most is that whatever vehicle you’re in, it’s reliable, well-maintained, and right for the job.
At Adindi, we offer a wide range of manual and automatic dual control vehicles – small, medium and large – so whatever direction you’re heading, we can help you find the right fit. Head to our cars page, or get in touch to talk it through.
